What Mumbai is like

Mumbai moves faster than any other Indian metro, and you will feel the change of pace. Salaries are higher, networks are denser, and the jobs in finance, media, tech and business exist at a scale you won't find anywhere else in India. Living here costs a lot, but the city is worth it.

Layout & Zones
Mumbai stretches along a narrow west-coast peninsula, once seven separate islands, gradually joined into a single landmass by reclamation projects begun with the Hornby Vellard (c. 1784) and largely completed by 1845. The city splits into South Mumbai (SoBo), the heritage, civic and business core, and the Western and Central suburbs running north along the railway corridors. Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) is the modern business district (CBD), positioned centrally between the two. The Arabian Sea bookends the city to the west, and the Eastern Express Highway and harbour to the east.
Moving from Bangalore or Hyderabad? The biggest adjustment is cost, Mumbai runs 50-79% higher across all expense categories. The second adjustment is space, Mumbai apartments are typically 20-30% smaller for the same rent. What you gain is access to India's densest professional network and a city with irreplaceable energy.

02Culture & Heritage

History and culture

Mumbai has 400 years of layered history. You can see Portuguese, British, Parsi, Maharashtrian, Gujarati and global influences side by side. Its culture was built over centuries and runs far deeper than Bollywood.

Aug-Sep
Ganesh Chaturthi
11 days, entire city-wide. Your first Ganpati season will redefine what you thought you knew about Indian festival celebration. Lalbaugcha Raja draws millions. The Visarjan immersion procession is one of the world's great spectacles.
Year-round
Elephanta Caves
30 minutes by ferry from the Gateway of India. UNESCO-listed 5th-8th century cave temples. The Trimurti sculpture is one of India's greatest artistic achievements. Essential cultural visit in your first month.

Oct-Nov
Diwali in Mumbai
Residential and intimate, balcony diyas, rooftop fireworks, mithai delivery to every flat in your building. Join the gift-giving culture: send dry fruit and sweet hampers to colleagues and your Society Secretary. It builds goodwill that lasts the year.
Year-round
Marine Drive at Night
The Queen's Necklace, 6km of illuminated promenade that becomes Mumbai's collective living room every evening. The Mumbai Literary Festival (November) rounds out a surprisingly sophisticated cultural calendar for a city of this commercial intensity.
Year-round
Art, Museums & Galleries
The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (the former Prince of Wales Museum) in Fort anchors Mumbai's museum scene, alongside the National Gallery of Modern Art, the Jehangir Art Gallery, and the NCPA's performing-arts stages, most of them clustered in the walkable Kala Ghoda arts precinct, which hosts a celebrated arts festival each February.

03Climate

Weather through the year

Mumbai is a tropical coastal city. The monsoon is dramatic, the humidity is real and the winter is pleasant. Coming from Hyderabad or Bangalore, the humidity is the biggest surprise, but sea breezes make it bearable all year.

Winter · Best Season
November to February
17-33°C, low humidity, sea breeze. Mumbai's finest months, the social calendar at maximum intensity, beaches accessible, and evenings cool enough for a light layer. If you are arriving from Bangalore, this is when Mumbai's weather will impress you.
Light jacket for Dec/Jan evenings
Best beach and outdoor weather
Peak restaurant and events season
Hot & Humid Summer
March to May
Highs around 33 to 34°C with 80%+ humidity, hotter in spells. For arrivals from Hyderabad, the heat is familiar, the combination with coastal humidity is the new element. Ensure your apartment's AC is functioning and serviced before April. May brings spectacular pre-monsoon lightning storms over the Arabian Sea.
Humidity makes 35° feel like 44°
Hydration critical, ORS sachets at home
AC servicing essential before April
Monsoon
June to September
Around 2,400mm in four months. For those arriving from Hyderabad or Bangalore, this is a completely different category of monsoon. Cities flood. The Western Ghats become spectacular. Embrace waterproof bags, follow BMC (city council) alerts, and plan your first June arrival with the knowledge that the city will be disrupted, beautifully.
Waterproof bag as permanent work accessory
Avoid Matunga/Dadar during heavy rain events
