Society Culture
Housing Society Life
Join your building's WhatsApp group on Day 1. Your Society Secretary is your most important contact for everything from parking to maintenance. Mumbai housing society culture is its own ecosystem, embrace it.
Ganpati Season
Plan Your First August
Ganesh Chaturthi (August/September) is 11 days of neighbourhood-level celebration. Traffic is disrupted, but the joy is absolute. Plan travel before or after, not during the final Visarjan procession day.
Cutting Chai
Mumbai's Own Drink
Ordering "ek cutting" at any street stall immediately marks you as someone who understands Mumbai. ₹10 to 15, served in a small glass. The half-portion was invented for commuters in a hurry, this city's contribution to Indian tea culture.

02Local Language Guide

Bambaiya and Marathi words that help

Even if you speak Hindi well, Mumbai has its own way of talking. Bambaiya Hindi, a mix of Hindi, Marathi, English and Gujarati, shows you belong here. A few words of Marathi, the official language of Maharashtra, win a lot of goodwill from your neighbours, local staff and the members of your housing society.

नमस्कार
Marathi
Namaskar
Formal Marathi greeting, more respectful than “namasté” in a Maharashtra context. Use with your landlord, Society Secretary, or local shop owners. People warm to you straight away.
भाई / यार
Bambaiya
Bhai / Yaar
“Bhai, kidhar ja raha?”, “Hey man, where are you going?” Used affectionately across all social levels in Mumbai. Your auto-rickshaw driver, your colleague, and your building guard all use it equally.
आमची मुंबई
Marathi
Aamchi Mumbai
“Our Mumbai.” The phrase encapsulates the fierce pride Mumbaikars feel for their city. Mean it, not ironically, and everyone who hears it will warm to you.
फास्ट / स्लो
Transit
Fast vs Slow Local
Mumbai suburban rail has “Fast” and “Slow” trains, they stop at different stations. Getting on the wrong one is a universal Mumbai rite of passage. Check the platform indicator board before every boarding.
सोसायटी सेक्रेटरी
Building
Society Secretary
The all-powerful building committee chair. Your first call for parking, maintenance, noise complaints, and guest passes. Introduce yourself in the first week with a box of sweets, it sets the tone for your entire tenancy.
कटिंग चाय
Food
Cutting Chai
A half-portion of tea served in a small glass, Mumbai's own contribution to Indian chai culture. “Ek cutting dena” at any street stall signals that you understand Mumbai. ₹10 to 15, universally available.
टपोरी
Slang
Tapori
Street-smart, resourceful, knows all the shortcuts, the classic Mumbai character. Used affectionately. “He's very tapori” is a compliment here, it means he knows the city and how to navigate it.
खाना खाया का?
Hospitality
Khaana khaya ka?
Have you eaten? The ultimate Mumbai hospitality question. Food is love in this city. If you say “nahi”, not yet, someone will immediately find something for you to eat. Saying yes politely is also perfectly acceptable.
दलाल स्ट्रीट
Finance
Dalaal Street
The colloquial name for the Bombay Stock Exchange area in Fort, Mumbai's Wall Street. Used broadly to refer to the Indian capital markets and the finance professional community.
धन्यवाद
Marathi
Dhanyavaad
Thank you in Marathi. Much more impactful than “shukriya” (Urdu-Hindi) in a Maharashtra context. Your kirana shop owner, building guard, or auto-rickshaw driver will remember you for it.
जुगाड
Philosophy
Jugaad
The resourceful Indian improvisation mindset, a creative workaround, a fix that shouldn't work but does. Essential vocabulary for navigating Mumbai's bureaucracy, infrastructure, and daily life. Embrace it.
कसा आहेस?
Marathi
Kasa aahas?
How are you? (Marathi, male). “Theek aahe”, I'm fine, is the response. Exchanging this with your local shopkeeper or building guard creates a human connection that makes Mumbai feel like home faster.
